Description
Two monuments are located in the churchyard immediately south of the chancel of the Church of St Andrew, dating from around 1700.
The first monument, known as the Smart monument, is a chest tomb situated about one meter south of the chancel. This early 18th-century structure is made of Ham stone and features a moulded plinth. It has semi-circular arched panels, one on each end and two on each side, complete with imposts, keystones, and egg-and-dart moulding on the arches. The tomb has no frieze and is topped with moulded coving that leads to a hipped top. It commemorates Magdelen Smart, who died in 1717, her mother Magdelen, who died in 1727, and Robert Markes, who died in 1765.
The second monument, known as the Markes monument, is located about two meters south of the chancel and is a headstone from the late 17th century. This headstone is made of Ham stone and consists of a single slab that is approximately 700 mm wide and 800 mm high, with a flat top. It has a moulded surround and features two semi-circular arched panels at the head, which include keystones and imposts, with the center resting on a corbel. This monument commemorates William Markes, who died in 1690, and his wife Alice, who died in 1695.
