Description
West Newton Manor, previously listed as Manor Farmhouse, dates back to around 1346 and features a core that has been remodelled with additions in the 17th century for the Cheek family, along with alterations and additions from the late 19th century. The building is constructed of colourwashed random rubble with a slate roof and large brick stacks, one of which is located on the frontage on a projecting base.
The manor has an irregular plan and elevations and stands two storeys high, with a layout of 1:1:1:1 bays. It features 3, 4, and 5-light wooden-mullioned windows, some of which are 17th century while others are 19th century, all set in cambered head reveals. The left bay is part of a 19th-century wing that has a front-facing gable, and there are three windows on the first floor within gabled half-dormers, each adorned with wood and plaster enrichment.
A two-storey gabled porch is located at the third bay, featuring a 5-light wooden-mullioned window on the first floor. The ground floor has an opening with a moulded 4-centred head wooden architrave that includes incised lettering reading "H.C.K." for Henry and Katherine Cheek, dated 1622, and an inner door with a studded 2-panelled design. To the right return, there is a gabled ashlar bellcote. The returns and rear of the building show significant 19th-century alterations, including some 2-light mullioned windows in the left return.
The interior retains remnants of aisle posts, timber-framed partitioning, and a 17th-century staircase, along with other notable features.
