Description

A former inn, now two houses, dating from the 18th century. The building is constructed with a local stone plinth, with the remainder rendered and lined as ashlar, and has a Welsh slate roof hipped at the East end. It is two storeys high with attics, and originally comprised three bays. The ground floor windows are 12-pane sashes, with windows in pairs to bays 1 and 3. A 6-panel door is located to the left of bay 1, set within a heavy frame and plain surround. Bay 2 features a keystoned 3-centre carriage arch on impost blocks with deep corbels. Between the first-floor windows are rendered panels with reverse curved corners. The first-floor windows have architraved surrounds, with the centre window having lugged and heeled detailing. Dormers with pitched roofs are positioned above bays 1 and 3. A return and lead flat-roofed angle is present on the East side. The inn, known as The Old Bull Inn, was first recorded in 1680 and served as Bruton's main coaching inn, before closing around 1960. The interiors have not been inspected.
