Description

Charity Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the 17th century and later, located in Lovington Village. It is constructed from local lias stone that is cut and squared, with Doulting stone dressings. The farmhouse features a steeply pitched Welsh slate roof with coped gables and brick chimney stacks at the ends and in the middle. The building has two storeys and four bays, with a plinth and a band course. It has 2-light mullioned windows with plain surrounds and architraves, while bay 3 has single light windows on both levels. Between the first and second bays, there is a 20th-century lean-to porch with a glazed door.

Attached to the northeast corner of the farmhouse is a gateway that features a pair of ashlar gatepiers. These gatepiers have plinths, plain shafts with rebates for gates, cornice tops with steps, and necked bases, although the urn or ball finials are missing. The interior of the farmhouse has not been seen, but reports indicate that it originally had a three-room plan with a cross passage. It includes chamfered beams with stop and runouts, as well as scroll stops. There is a fireplace with an oven in the north gable and a central small fireplace that has a wood panel above it, featuring a painted view of the house from the 18th century. The south room has moulded plasterwork on its beams. The house is noted to have had a formal garden, which is unusual for a farmhouse, if the painting is accurate.
