Description
Mill House is a house located on Roman Road in Northover, likely built in the early 19th century, though it may include elements from earlier periods. The structure is made from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, topped with a Welsh slate roof that features stepped coped gables and a very shallow pitch, along with brick chimney stacks. It has three storeys and three bays. The windows are sash style in plain openings with dovetailed stone lintels; the ground floor has a 15-pane window, while the first and second floors each have 12-pane windows. There is a modern window in the lower bay of the third section, which is believed to be the location of a waterwheel that was removed in the early 20th century. Between the first and second bays, there is a six-flush-panel door in a matching opening, accompanied by a 20th-century timber and slate porch. The rear elevation features one early pattern leaded casement window, with the rest being later pattern casements. The interior has not been seen. There may be remnants of other mill buildings at the east corner of the property. The mill was first recorded in 1155, became known as 'New Mill' from 1275, and operated until around 1816. The dry course of the mill stream is still identifiable as of July 1985, and it is likely that this house was modified shortly after the mill ceased operations.
