Description

Darlington House is a detached house, likely built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of local lias stone coursed rubble with brick dressings around the windows, which were probably rendered in the past. The house features a hipped Welsh slate roof and a brick chimney stack. It has two storeys and five bays. The sash windows are set in segmental-arched openings, with 12 panes in the upper section and 15 panes in the lower section. The lower bay three contains a wide six-panel door with glazed toplights, framed by a bolection-mould timber architrave. This is complemented by an open stone porch supported by Tuscan columns and pilasters, featuring an entablature and pediment.

There is a two-bay extension to the north-east with a flat roof and a stone eaves course. Bay one of this extension has a matching sash window above and a three-centre-arched through carriageway below. Bay two has been modified to accommodate a mid-20th century shop, which is not of special interest. At the rear, there is an extension made of colourwashed brick with a plain clay tiled roof, which may be older than the main house. This extension includes boarded garage doors and two two-light stone mullioned windows with beaded surrounds, as well as a loft door and a set of pigeon holes above.

About 2 metres east of the house, there is a low wrought-iron railing with spear-point tops and cast urn finials on the standards, along with a pair of matching gates opposite the door. These features enhance the setting of the house and contribute to the overall streetscape.
