Description
Ilchester Bridge is a road bridge over the River Yeo (Ivel), dating from the late 12th century to early 13th century, and was remodeled in 1797. It is constructed from local lias stone with Ham stone dressings. The bridge features seven arches, with the most northerly arch serving the mill stream. There are long passing bays on either side of the center, although the bridge has been widened in the 19th and 20th centuries. The arches are semi-circular and include keystones, with a band course at road level and plain chamfered top stones, lacking any coping. Angled cutwaters are present on both sides. The balustrading has concave curves at each end of the passing bays and right-angle returns at the ends, with the northwest return being extended. Ilchester Bridge is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No 236).
