Description
No 18 High Street is a house, probably built in the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring ashlar stone dressings. The roof is made of plain clay tiles and has a simple gable and abutment, with brick chimney stacks at each end. The building has two storeys and three bays. It stands on a high stone plinth and has rusticated quoins and an eaves cornice. The windows are 12-pane sash types set in architraved surrounds. The central doorway is accessed by two steps and features a six-flush panel door within a semi-circular sub-arch, topped by a cast iron Regency pattern fanlight. This doorway is framed by attached Tuscan columns and an open pediment. The interior has not been seen. Notably, the building served as the local hospital for a few years starting in 1901.
