Description

The Old Ship Aground Public House is a hotel that underwent remodelling in the 1880s, based on an earlier structure. It is built from rubblestone with freestone dressings and features a hipped slate roof with five large 20th-century dormers and three brick stacks on the south-west slope, one dormer on the south-east, and one dormer with two brick stacks on the north-west. The building has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys with an attic.

The south-west side has an 11-window range, while the south-east end, which faces the harbour, has a four-window range. On the first floor, there are four full-height French windows with small panes that open onto a balcony supported by two canted bays, which contain 6/6-pane sash windows. The left bay features a door with an overlight. The south-west facade primarily consists of 6/6-pane sash windows with rusticated surrounds and moulded arrisses. Above the ground-floor windows, there is a string course that is interrupted by a tall stair window on the left side, which has a mullion and two transoms.

On the north-west side, there are five 6/6-pane sash windows with brick surrounds on the first floor. The ground floor has a segmental brick arched double-doored entrance, along with a smaller 6/6-pane sash window with a brick surround to the right, and another smaller window also to the right. The interior has been altered on the ground floor. The former gate piers have been demolished. The building occupies a prominent position next to the quay and is included for its group value.
