Description

Orchard Portman Farmhouse is a mid-19th century farmhouse built on the site of an earlier structure. It features squared blue lias and sandstone with brick dressings that are rendered to look like ashlar on the ground floor facade and the left return. The building has hipped slate roofs, with a steep pitch on the service block and brick stacks.

The farmhouse is a double pile house facing east and has the remains of a verandah on the south side, with a service block at the north-west corner. It is two storeys high and has three bays. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows with marginal glazing bars set in segmental openings. The ground floor has canted outer bays with similar sash windows, and a cantilevered porch supported by shaped brackets spans the width of the facade. The central panelled door has four lights and a fanlight above.

To the left, there is a raking wall leading to the verandah, featuring a coped stone verge with a pyramid finial and a pointed arched entrance. The entrance is adorned with boarded red and blue glazed brick quoins and has a divided tracery head with a half-glazed door that has many lights, some of which were broken at the time of survey in February 1985.

The left return of the farmhouse has two bays on the ground floor, with windows set to one side, all 12-pane sashes with marginal glazing bars. Above the glazed four-bay verandah, there are decorative iron ties. Raking buttresses are pierced by pointed arch openings with banded red and blue glazed brick quoins, and there is a coped verge on the end bay, which is either missing or was never built. The remains of a patterned tiled pavement can also be seen. The service wing at the rear has one to two bays and features an entrance in the angle with a cantilevered wooden porch. The farmhouse is part of the Portman estate.
