4/157 Barn on south side of foldyard at Orchard Portman Farm -

GV II

Semi-detached barn adjoining range of farmbuildings at west end (not included in this list). Early-mid C18, reroofed mid C19, minor alterations late C20. Red brick, English bond, plinth, slate roof, porch gabled roof altered to mansard. Plan: barn with porch facing north onto foldyard, roof continued west to farm covered way linking mid C19 range of buildings (not included). Ten or 11 bays, central 2-storey porch with square headed opening, square headed doorways end bay right and to left of porch, diaper pattern ventilation holes with long ventilation slits below on facade, loft opening west gable end, 2 tall stepped brick buttresses, co-eval with building, on rear elevation. Interior: largely obscured by machinery, king-post roof. All that remains of the earlier Orchard Portman far. which was demolished and rebuilt mid C19 when Orchard Portman House itself was razed to the ground. Although slightly altered, a good example of an C18 brick barn.
