Description
The barn on the south side of the foldyard at Orchard Portman Farm is a semi-detached structure that dates from the early to mid-18th century. It was reroofed in the mid-19th century and has undergone minor alterations in the late 20th century. The barn is constructed of red brick in English bond with a plinth and features a slate roof. The porch has a gabled roof that has been altered to a mansard style.
The barn's layout includes a porch facing north towards the foldyard, with the roof extending west to connect with a covered way leading to a mid-19th century range of buildings that are not included in this listing. The barn consists of ten or eleven bays and has a central two-storey porch with a square-headed opening. There are square-headed doorways at the end bays to the right and left of the porch, as well as diaper pattern ventilation holes with long slits below on the facade. A loft opening is present on the west gable end, and there are two tall stepped brick buttresses on the rear elevation, which are contemporary with the building.
The interior is largely obscured by machinery but features a king-post roof. This barn is all that remains of the earlier Orchard Portman farm, which was demolished and rebuilt in the mid-19th century when Orchard Portman House was also razed. Despite some alterations, it is a good example of an 18th-century brick barn.
