Description
The barn at Bishopdown Farm is a large structure dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, located within a farm group. It features horizontal weather-boarding on a timber framework set on brick cill walls, topped with plain tile roofs. The barn is long and divided into two sections, maintaining a continuous ridge-line, and is positioned at right angles to the granary nearby.
Towards the yard, there are two hipped cart porches: the left porch has doors clad in corrugated iron, while the right porch has full-height plank doors. A lean-to structure is present on the left half and to the right of the right porch, though these are not of special interest. The right return gable is half-hipped and includes a pair of full-height metal-clad doors, while the left return gable is also half-hipped, featuring a brick wall with a loading opening above a central door flanked by single lights, all with half-brick segmental heads. The brickwork is in English bond and returns for one bay, which is closed internally by a brick cross-wall.
The long far elevation has a pair of flush doors and a hipped porch with a swept-down roof, along with a six-part casement window towards the left end. Inside, the barn consists of ten bays: the northern end, closer to the granary, is from the 19th century and has queen-post trusses with two purlins, primarily a bolted structure. The bay nearest the gable doors has been modified for the entry of very high loads. The 18th-century section comprises five bays, featuring strutted queen-post trusses and two purlins, with a narrow aisle on the west side. Despite some later additions on the yard side, the barn remains mostly in original condition and is an important complement to the large granary located approximately six meters to the northeast.
