Description

The Black Swan Inn is an inn with origins dating back to the 18th century, although it was reshaped in the 19th century. It is constructed from local stone rubble, featuring a brick facade in Flemish bond that is colourwashed, and has a plain clay tile roof with simple gables and brick chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays.

On the upper floor, there are sash windows with 12 panes in plain openings. The ground floor includes a small 20th-century shopfront in the first bay, with a recessed door to the right, followed by a 12-pane sash window. To the right of the second bay is a 20-pane sash window with a segmental arched head, and in the third bay, there is a deep recess with a flat head, which features 20th-century and leaded sidelights.

There is a painted brick extension on the south gable, which is single-storey with a pantiled roof and a stepped coped gable topped with a finial, along with a throughway at the south end. A range of outbuildings is located at the rear, and there is a 20th-century covered way on the north gable. The interior has not been seen. Historical records mention a Black Swan Inn as early as 1727, though it may not have been on this site. Between 1815 and 1841, this inn was known to operate a friendly society.
