Description
This public shelter, which was formerly a well, was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1908 as a memorial to Mark Horner for the Horner family. It is built from squared Doulting rubble with some ashlar and features a three-sided open structure topped with a pyramidal stone tile roof supported by three piers. On the east side, there is a wall with a stone bench, plain coping, and lettering by Eric Gill that reads: "For the use of Mells Village In The Memory of Mark Horner 1908." The floor consists of flagstones with a central section of cobbles arranged in a three-sided pattern, and there is a flight of stone steps to the west. The roof is supported by an elaborate oak king post construction.
