Description
The entrance gateway, walls, and railings to The Firs and The Lodge were built in the 19th century and were originally part of the grounds of a house designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The structure features ham stone ashlar and wrought-iron railings. The boundary wall to The Firs is approximately one metre high, made of ashlar with a castellated top, and has a curved return leading back to the formal gateway between the two properties. The gateway consists of square-plan ashlar piers with moulded and shallow-hipped tops, and it includes a pair of wrought-iron gates that have staple spikes on the rails, quatrefoil-band middle rails, and double-curve bracing on the bottom panels. The north-west and north-east boundaries to The Lodge are lined with matching railings and feature a pair of gates near the house, along with a curved corner; the braced standards are topped with iron finials. This entire structure is an important part of the setting for all three houses.
