Description
Moorlands, also known as Glen House, is a large country house dating from the late 19th century. It was designed in a 16th-century style by the architect Sir George Gilbert Scott for William Cuff. The house is constructed of Ham stone ashlar and near ashlar, with Welsh slate roofs between moulded, coped gables, some of which have crocketed finials. It features octagonal ashlar chimney stacks arranged in groups, each with moulded plinths and caps. The building has a complex plan, with two storeys and attics, and a six-bay south elevation. It incorporates a low battlemented parapet and hollow-chamfered mullioned windows, some with transoms and cinquefoil traceried lights. The first bay has two-light windows; the second is an octagonal projection with single lights to three sides; the third bay is gabled with three-light windows; the fourth bay is recessed with two-light windows. The fifth bay is a three-storey tower, with single-light windows at the upper level and an angled projection at the lower level. The battlemented parapet of the tower has a corbel table and a small pediment over a shield plaque between the central merlins on the south side. The sixth bay is a taller gable with an attic window, surmounted by an animal figure holding a weathervane. The main entrance is on the north side. The building's composition is romantic in style. In June 1986, much of the detail was obscured by creeper covering the facade.
