Description

Wood Court Farmhouse is a detached house, apparently rebuilt in the 1840s, while incorporating earlier fabric dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. It is constructed of local grey lias stone with Ham stone dressings, with some parts rendered, and has an ashlar south elevation. The roof is covered in Welsh slate with overhung gables, and the brick chimney stacks are arranged in groups set diagonally on rectangular plan bases. The south elevation faces at a right angle to the road and is two storeys high with attics. A half-height buttress is located at the southwest corner. The ground floor features pointed arched, 15th-century style traceried windows with three lights and labels. Above are hollow-chamfered mullioned and transomed two-light windows, without labels, with those to the second floor set in small gables with crocketted finials. The second bay projects and has a triangular arch leading to a small open outer porch, featuring plain incised spandrils and a label. A plaque bearing a coat of arms is situated above the porch. The first-floor window has a four-centre arched light window with a label and a stretched quatrefoil window is situated in the gable. A plaque is positioned at mid-level on the west gable, alongside a half-height buttress and a small attic vent; this section of wall predates 1840. The north elevation is rendered and largely plain, with two lean-to porches and some 20th-century windows. However, towards the east is a small single-light, pointed arched window, and towards the west a 14th-century two-light window at mezzanine level, with a quatrefoil to the head. The interior was not recorded.
