Description
The crinkle-crankle wall forming an enclosed garden is located in Compton Bishop, dating from around 1910. This wall is constructed of English bond brick with brick and tile coping, and it has a single brick thickness. Its serpentine shape is designed to fit the layout of the garden. The north-east and south-west sides of the wall are ramped in eleven distinct sections to accommodate the slope of the hill on which it stands. There are two gateways: one in the center of the south-east wall features a plain tile coping and a plank gate, while the other in the center of the south-west wall is flanked by brick buttresses with hipped caps and has a decorative wrought iron gate. A later greenhouse within the walled garden is not included in this listing. This wall was formerly part of the Webbington Manor estate and is considered a rare feature in the county.
