Description

The parish church of St Andrew is an Anglican church with origins dating back to the 11th century, significantly altered and extended between the 13th and 15th centuries, and restored and further extended in the early 20th century. The main fabric is of rendered rubble with a plain clay tile roof, with the organ chamber and vestry constructed of snecked rubble and a slate roof. The church consists of a nave and chancel, a north chapel, a south porch and tower, a south vestry, and an organ chamber.

The west window of the nave is a three-light Perpendicular window with a slight drip mould. To the north are a restored two-light Decorated window and a square-headed two-light window also under a drip mould. A blocked north door with a segmental head is situated between the windows, alongside a 20th-century buttress. A rood stair is contained within a lean-to turret at the northeast of the nave, and a single lancet window is located on the south side. The chancel, under the same roofline, has a restored three-light east window, dating from 1913. The north chapel is gabled, with a cusped trefoiled east window, a two-light Perpendicular window to the north, and a small cusped window to the south. A small 20th-century lean-to boiler shed is also present.

The south tower is single-stage, embattled, with low buttresses only at the outer corners. A weathered set back is situated approximately halfway up the tower's exterior at both the east and west sides. Plain slit windows illuminate the bell chamber. The south organ chamber and vestry, dated 1926, feature a weathered buttress that separates a priest’s door with shouldered jambs and a two-light window above from a small cusped three-light window. To the east, a two-light window is accompanied by a quatrefoil above, and the quoins bear a consecration cross and date.

Inside the church, the nave and chancel have a cusped rear arch to the south lancet. The wagon roof is supported by angel corbels dating from 1900. A much-restored Perpendicular rood screen is present. The chancel was panelled and a new reredos was installed in 1913, coinciding with the removal of plaster from the nave and the insertion of a new stone floor. Unusual flat arches pierce the nave and chancel wall, providing access for the vestry and organ chamber. The south tower porch contains a south doorway with a damaged remnant of a 11th/12th-century arch; the segmental headed arch has simple mouldings with pellet decoration above, and an empty niche. A simple square squint allows a view of the chancel from a considerable depth within the nave wall.

Notable fittings include an octagonal font from the 14th century with a Jacobean hood, and a Perpendicular pulpit made for the local school. The pulpit is half-octagon, with two traceried lights on each side, separated by buttresses and featuring free-standing finials, a foliate frieze, and a cornice, all supported by a trumpet foot resting on a human corbel.
