Description

No 4 is a house that has been converted into a school, dating from around 1870. It is built from Doulting ashlar with a slate roof and features ashlar stacks at the center and on each side. The building is designed in a symmetrical Italianate style and has two storeys and an attic with five bays, featuring sash windows set in moulded stone architraves.

The central porch has solid sides and a doorway with a Caernarvon-arch head, a moulded surround, a six-panelled door, and a fanlight above. This porch is flanked by Tuscan pilasters. The building has a moulded cornice, a parapet with balusters, and moulded coping. There are end pilasters on either side of the facade and one on each side of the porch, which extend into the moulded cornice. The mansard roof includes three dormers, with the central dormer set in a semi-circular gable featuring scalloped decoration, while the other two have triangular pediments above.

There is a lower two-storey wing with two bays on each side, which has similar window styles to the main block. This wing also features end pilasters, a moulded cornice, a parapet with coping, and brick stacks on each side. The property includes rusticated ashlar gate piers at the entrance on Paul Street, topped with pineapple finials, and a low wall extending 10 meters east and 10 meters west along Paul Street, terminating in two additional ashlar piers, with the right pier featuring a ball finial.
