Description
The Packhorse Inn is a building that dates from the early to mid-18th century and is located on Christchurch Street West. It is a two-storey structure built of rubble with pantile roofs. The left side of the building, known as No 13, features two bays that are set back and has a projecting two-and-a-half storey extension to the right, which is connected to No 14.
No 13 includes two first-floor windows with bolection surrounds on the left and two similar windows with cornices on the ground floor of the projecting extension. Above this extension are windows with raised surrounds that have ogee moulded outer edges, similar to those on No 14. The right side of No 13 has a small window on the second floor and three windows on the first floor, with the outer two being blind and the centre featuring a 19th-century sash window in an architrave surround with a cornice. Below, there are paired doorways that now have 19th-century sashes, with architrave surrounds and broken serpentine pediments above, which contain carved urns—a local Mannerist feature.
No 14 is slightly lower, also two storeys, and has five windows with glazing bar sashes on the first floor, all with raised surrounds that have ogee moulded outer edges. On the ground floor, there are two doorways, with the left-hand one featuring a raised outer moulded surround and cut brackets supporting a moulded flat hood.
