Description
The Ship Inn is a late 17th century building with older origins, located at the corner of Christchurch Street West and Catherine Street. It stands 2 and a half storeys tall and incorporates various structures. The exterior is made of rubble with a slate roof and features modern brick chimneys, along with coped verges on the gables. The corner front has two late 19th century paired sash windows in flush moulded surrounds, and a central door with cut brackets supporting a stone hood, also from the 19th century. The gabled return to the south includes a two-light mullion window in the gable and a three-light mullion window on the first floor with drips. There is a two-storey extension with two and three-light ovolo mullion windows, where the ground floor originally had a pair of two-light windows to the left. At the rear, there is a stair turret at the angle with the extension. Inside, the staircase is blocked off, and there are diamond stop door surrounds. The principal room on the first floor features strap-work carving on the lintel over the lobby leading into the room.
