Description
Gilling Bridge over Gilling Beck is a bridge that dates from the 15th century and was rebuilt in 1799. It is constructed of ashlar and features three segmental arches from 1799, which have even voussoirs and archivolt bands. These arches rest on triangular cutwaters and are supported by 20th-century concrete foundations. The soffits of the arches display herringbone tooling. To the south, there is a smaller dry arch from the 15th century, characterized by five square ribs. The upstream side of the bridge is obscured by a metal footbridge, and the downstream side has undergone significant restoration. The Quarter Sessions at Northallerton allocated £800 for the bridge's rebuilding in 1799, as noted in Jervoise's "Ancient Bridges of the North of England" published in 1931.
