Description
This is a range of 18th-century cottages located at Nos. 1 to 11 Maison Dieu. The cottages are constructed of coursed rubble, mostly rendered, with Welsh slate, stone slate, and cement tiled roofs.
The building can be divided into four parts. No. 1 is a single-story, former shop with a gable end facing the road and a stone slate roof. It is thought to be a later addition to No. 3 and has a shaped projection on its gable end, likely a former external stack that has been cut back to the roofline. A three-light window with modern joinery is within this projection, with a single-light window above the door. No. 3 is a two-bay cottage with a central door, rendered with the render apparently intended to imitate ashlar; it has a Welsh slate roof with two brick ridge stacks, one shared with the east gable and another to the left of the front door. Nos. 5 and 7 form a near-symmetrical pair of single-bay cottages with a shared through-passage door flanked by the front doors of the cottages, creating a central bay. This section is unrendered, with flat arches of handmade brick framing the openings. The three first-floor windows are eight-over-eight pane sashes. A stone slate roof and brick end stacks complete this section. Nos. 9 and 11 are a near-symmetrical pair of narrow, two-bay cottages, with the first floor above the door to No. 9 (the narrower western cottage) being blind. This section is rendered and has a cement pantile roof, with no remaining chimney stacks. The windows throughout the range are generally two-over-two horned sashes in plain openings with projecting sills, with some exceptions noted above. Front doors are replacements of varying styles. Nos. 1 to 15 (odd) form a group.
