Description
4 and 6 Anchorage Hill are two houses, originally three or possibly four cottages. They were likely built in the late 18th or early 19th century. The southern house (number 4) is of rubble stone construction with flat brick arches over the openings. The northern house (number 6) is rendered. Both properties have Welsh slate roofs and brick chimney stacks.
Number 4 is three bays wide and two stories high, consisting of a pair of cottages which have been joined but retain both front doors. These doors are located in the center of the facade, below a single, blind window on the first floor. Above the blind window is a small, carved medieval head, and below the windowsill is a weathered coat of arms or cartouche. The windows on both floors are two-over-two sash windows.
Number 6 is two bays wide and three stories high, though the overall height is the same as number 4. The top storey likely extends into the attic space and features square windows set at floor level. A six-panel front door is set within a wide 19th-century pilastered surround with a flat hood supported by carved console brackets. The door and surround occupy a space similar to that of the paired doors of number 4, suggesting that the building may have originally been a symmetrical pair of cottages. The windows are two-over-two sash windows, with the ground floor windows spaced slightly further apart to accommodate the front door.
The roof is continuous across both properties, with a shared ridge stack and a ridge stack on each gable.
