Description
The statue of Mars and its pedestal, located approximately 40 metres south of The Priory, dates from the early 18th century and was restored around 1985 by Andrew Naylor. The sculptor remains unknown. The statue is made of lead and stands on an ashlar pedestal. The overall height is approximately 2.50 metres, featuring a lifesize figure of Mars in Roman armour, holding a spear in his left hand. The rectangular pedestal has a moulded base and cornice. This statue is not in its original position and is part of a group of early 18th-century lead statues.
