Description

White Gate is a pair of gate piers dating from the early to mid-18th century. They are constructed from sandstone ashlar and vermiculated sandstone. Each pier is square in section and approximately 4 metres high, standing on finely tooled bases. The piers feature vermiculated long and short quoins that create alternating bands of rustication on the front and back. There are shallow pilasters on each side, an impost band with raised key moulding, and a frieze adorned with a floral swag in high relief on both the front and back, along with reversed scrolled consoles on the sides. The piers are topped with an overhanging dentilled cornice and low flat caps. They serve as the entrance to the Castle Howard Estate.
