Description
The Reading Room is a former reading room built in the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The front is made of chiselled sandstone, while the sides are constructed from rubble sandstone set on a squared sandstone plinth. It features herringbone-tooled raised quoins and finely tooled dressings, topped with a slate roof that includes a timber bellcote and rebuilt brick stacks.
This single-storey building has a three-bay front, with a lower single-bay outbuilding to the left. There is a board door in the outbuilding, located beneath a tripartite lintel. The original doorway in the center, which had a raised triple-keyed surround, is now blocked by a 16-pane sash window with a stone sill. Similar windows are found on the left and right sides. Above the central opening is a First World War memorial clock, with an inscribed keystone beneath it. The building has a raised eaves band, coped gables, and shaped kneelers, with stacks at the end right and center. The bellcote, which houses the clock bell, is positioned to the right of the center stack.
