Description

Hillam Hall and West House are two dwellings, originally one house, built in the 1820s. Inscribed plaques indicate construction in 1827, alongside the inscription 'AM 5835', but the house has earlier origins. The building is constructed with a stucco facade and has a stone slate roof. It is arranged as an H-shaped plan, designed in an Elizabethan revival style. The main part of the house has a four-bay centre with a single tall storey on the left side and two storeys on the right. There are two-storey, single-bay wings attached to either side. An embattled porch, off-centre, shelters the main entrance, featuring a Tudor arch and shields above the door, which itself is a Gothick panelled door within a four-centred surround. The central section has a tall, five-light mullion window with round-headed lights and hoodmoulds. Matching five-light mullion windows with round heads and hoodmoulds are on the right side.

The wings each have a bay window on the ground floor, composed of five round-headed mullion and transom lights, also under hoodmoulds, with battlements above. The first floor of the wings features a five-light mullion window with rounded heads in each bay, again under hoodmoulds. The gables bear shields displaying the date and inscription. Kneelers are topped with finials, and the roof has coping. A finial sits at the apex of the right side. Pairs of roof and ridge stacks have moulded bases and crenellations. The rear elevation features mainly two and three-light mullion windows. Inside Hillam Hall, there is an imperial staircase with turned balustrades, and a panelled room with a Gothick arch to the rear. A three-light stained glass window depicting Flora is located on the staircase.
