Description
This is a threshing barn located ten metres southwest of Hall Farm in Hillam. It is probably from the early 17th century and has undergone some later alterations. The barn is constructed from magnesian limestone rubble and has an asbestos roof. It stands two storeys high and consists of four bays, with single-storey outshuts at each end. The barn features a 20th-century entrance between two flat-headed entrances. On the first floor, there are pitching doors in the first and third bays, while other window openings have been blocked. The structure includes triangular and slit breathers. Inside, there is a king post roof with chamfered beams, and beams on both sides for threshing machinery. This barn is notable as part of a 17th-century complex that includes Hall Farm, a cowshed, a granary, stables, and Burton Cottage and Chantries Cottage, which are reputed to have been the original Hillam Hall.
