Description

Brompton Bridge is a bridge that may date back to 1691, with further rebuilding and widening occurring in the mid to late 18th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar and rubble and features a single segmental arch. The downstream side, which is the older section, is made of rubble with ashlar voussoirs and a slab hood-mould, and has a cobble parapet with segmental ashlar coping. The upstream side, which was widened, is built of ashlar sandstone with rock-faced rusticated voussoirs and includes a band and an ashlar parapet with segmental coping. An earlier bridge existed in the 12th century and was rebuilt in 1691, with possible further modifications and widening later on. The road from Brompton to Richmond was turnpiked between 1750 and 1751.
