Description
The column located approximately ten metres south of The Bungalow is a monumental milestone from the 18th century, made of sandstone. It features a Tuscan column raised on two square steps. A cubic block is inserted into the shaft of the column, which has inscriptions on its four faces: the west face reads "Ouse Gill," the south face states "Boroughbridge 4 miles," the east face says "Ouse River Head," and the north face indicates "YORK 13 miles." Originally, the column supported a stone sphere and an iron weathervane. It was erected to mark the source of the Ouse Gill Beck, which flows into the River Ouse approximately 4.5 kilometers to the southeast.
