Description
This guide post, located on a traffic island at the junction with Long Lane, dates back to 1827 and is made of sandstone, with some parts rendered. It has an octagonal shape and stands approximately 3 metres high. The base consists of two chamfered blocks, leading to a tapered column topped with a large triangular cap that features a ball finial. Atop the finial is a small cup-shaped iron bracket with a spur. The year "1827" is inscribed on the top of the west side of the column. The cap has painted lettering and finger pointers indicating directions: Pontefract 2½, Barnsley 10 (on the west side), Darrington 3, York 29 (on the north-east side), Sheffield 13, and East Hardwick 2½ (on the south-east side).
