Description
The lychgate to the church of St. Cuthbert, dated 1878, is built from coursed squared sandstone with a timber superstructure and a red tiled roof, showcasing a Vernacular Revival style. It features stone side walls, each supported by a timber sill that holds three short turned posts, with tracery in the openings between them. There is prominent arch-bracing to a lateral beam and two longitudinal beams, with the inner beam displaying a brass plate inscribed in Gothic script that reads: "THIS LYCHGATE ERECTED 1878."
On the principal beams, there is an additional set of stout turned posts that support the purlins. Between the side walls, a pair of gates is adorned with quatrefoil panels in the lower half and turned balusters in the upper half, featuring scrolled wrought-iron spikes between them and decorated strap hinges on the top and bottom rails.
