Description
This is a mid-18th century house located on Pontefract Road, High Ackworth. It has a three-bay, single-depth plan with a rear addition that is not of particular architectural interest. The house is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with a slate roof. It is three storeys high, including the cellars.
The front elevation is in a Classical style, with prominent sill bands at ground and first floor levels, and displays strong symmetry. A striking feature is the elaborate central doorway, accessed by two semicircular stone steps, which has panelled double doors set within a Gibbs surround. This surround is incorporated into a moulded architrave with scrolled jambs and a dentilled pediment. Above the doorway, a Venetian window and a Diocletian window are set, both with keystones and glazing bars. The outer bays now have top-hung casement windows with glazing bars, designed to resemble sash windows, all within raised plain surrounds. The top floor windows are square. A three-pane cellar window is located to the right of the doorway.
Inside, a central stone staircase rises between two principal rooms. The room on the left has a large spine beam, stop-chamfered and with run-out stops, supporting joists with decorative detail. The room on the right contains a rectangular stone fireplace and the remains of a bread oven.
