Description

Manor House Garage is a house and shop that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with later extensions from the late 17th century and 18th century at the rear. The roof was possibly raised in the 18th century, and there have been modernizations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of whitewashed rendered brick on a high flat plinth and features a pantile roof. It has a lobby-entry plan with an added rear wing and is two stories tall with a four-bay front.

The original plank door with a pegged-on frame is located to the right of center. The building has 20th-century windows in altered openings throughout, except for a possibly original circular window above the door. There is a cornice at the ground floor level, and the gables are coped with moulded front kneelers. The end stacks include an external stack on the left side. At the rear, there is a staircase cross-gable on the left side of the extension wing, which has dentilled eaves.

Inside, the ground floor features a massive double-hearthed stack that remains intact. There is a moulded spine beam and joists in the room on the right end. A splendid 17th-century closed string staircase with bulbous turned balusters rises through the house to the attic. On the first floor, there is a studded partition wall, and in the attic, the roof trusses are reset with heavy, square-cut scantling, halved and pegged apexes, and collars.
