Description

Halton Hall is a former single house, now divided into two houses, dating from the mid-17th century with 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of squared rubble with stone dressings and features a stone slate roof. Originally L-shaped, it has been modified to a square plan with a continuous outshut within the angle. The structure is two storeys high and has a double front.

The central entrance features a chamfered surround with a basket arch lintel and a plank door. The left-hand bay has a 5-light double chamfered mullioned and transomed window on each storey, while the right-hand bay has a similar window but with 6 lights and king mullions, both adorned with dripmoulds. The upper floor right-hand window is offset to the left, likely to accommodate a now-removed timber firehood. There is a ridge stack on the right-hand gable end.

Inside, the front right-hand room contains a large inglenook fireplace with a chamfered surround and a basket arch, featuring mason's marks on the voussoirs. The left-hand return section is also two storeys with two bays. It has a central entrance with a moulded surround and a basket-arched lintel with incised spandrels, leading to a plank door. The left-hand bay features an 8-light double chamfered mullioned and transomed window on each storey, with the upper window offset to the right, possibly for a now-removed timber firehood. The right-hand bay has a similar window but with 5 lights per storey, and both floors have dripmoulds. The left-hand kneeler, left-hand ridge, and right of centre ridge stack are also present. The interior is not accessible but is reputed to contain a corbelled fireplace.
