Description

The Church of St Eloy is a Grade II listed church located in Great Smeaton. It dates back to the 13th century, with some parts from the 15th century, but was largely rebuilt by the architect G E Street in 1862. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and has a Welsh slate roof.

The nave features three bays and includes a south aisle with a catslide roof. On the south side, there is a gabled porch with a pointed-arched chamfered doorway beneath a relieving arch, along with impost bands, stone coping, and a gable cross. The windows on this side are plate traceried, consisting of three twin trefoil-headed lancets and a similar single lancet to the east. The west side has two tall trefoil-headed lancets with a quatrefoil above, while the north side features two-light pointed geometric traceried windows. The east side has stone coping and a gable cross, and there is a bellcote on the west with a square plan, arcaded sides, and a tall pyramidal roof. The aisle has a pointed Y-tracery west window.

The chancel has two bays and contains two 2-light windows with pointed arches, geometric tracery, and hoodmoulds. The east window, added in 1862, has three stepped cusped pointed lights with a hoodmould and relieving arch.

Inside, the south arcade is early Perpendicular style with three bays, featuring two octagonal piers and chamfered pointed arches, with figured corbels at each end. The chancel arch is similar and also has an impost band. There is a Norman round font with a diaper pattern and a notable wall monument from 1804 by Fisher of York dedicated to Henry Hewgill, the Rector of Hornby Grange.
