Description
The stables and cottages date from 1875-8 and were designed by Philip Webb for Major Percy Godman. They are constructed of red brick in English bond, with a pantile roof. The building is rectangular and comprises a two-story clock tower flanked by single-story, one-bay wings. To the left is the taller stable block, and to the right, a range of cottages with a single-story central section flanked by taller, square bays. The clock tower features a central segmental carriage arch, an oversailing gabled roof, a diamond-shaped clock surrounded by two four-pane windows, and a series of ventilation holes below the eaves. Brick kneelers and coping are present, along with external gable stacks and a fox weather vane. Low, one-bay wings extend to either side, the left one featuring a three-light window. A one-bay square cottage stands to the left corner, with a central three-light window beneath a segmental brick relieving arch. A small four-pane window is located below the eaves to the right, and a two-light, flat-headed dormer window sits centrally. The pyramidal roof has a large central stack. Behind the main block is a low, long wing connecting to a similar cottage at the other end. To the right of the clock tower is the stable block, which stretches back to form the other side of a courtyard. It has eight bays, with the central two bays flanked by large brick pilasters. A stable door is located to the right of the left-hand bay. The windows are two-light casements with brick relieving arches. The roof is hipped. The stables still retain their original stable boxes.
