Description

Smeaton Manor is a small country house built between 1875 and 1878 by architect Philip Webb for Major Percy Godman. The house is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a pantile roof. It features a main block that is two storeys plus attics, with five bays, and has one gabled wing on each side, also two storeys plus attics. The main garden front faces south, while the entrance is on the north side.

The ground-floor bays project slightly forward and are topped with a pantile roof. All openings are set beneath wide segmental arches, with the two outer and central bays containing two 8-pane sash windows, separated by central brick mullions and featuring herringbone brickwork above. On the first floor, there are sashes with glazing bars flanked by brick pilasters, and a moulded cornice that is slightly recessed over the sashes and advanced over the pilasters. The openings are bordered by areas of blank walling at the corners. The eaves oversail, and the large hipped roof has belled eaves, with three flat-headed dormers, each containing two sash windows. There are two ridge stacks.

On the north side, there is a central brick porch with a six-panel door set in a quoined moulded ashlar architrave topped with a cornice. This porch is flanked by sash windows in raised brick surrounds with cogged dripmoulds. Above, there are sashes with glazing bars flanked by pilasters and dormers similar to those on the south front. The wings on either side project forward and feature segmentally-arched sashes with glazing bars on each floor. The house has large brick kneelers and brick coping.

The interior originally designed by Philip Webb has been altered, and now features poor Georgian-style detailing.
