Description

The College of Ripon and York St John Main Building is a college constructed in 1862, designed by G T Andrews. It features red brick with ashlar dressings and hipped slate roofs that have overhanging eaves. The building has a moulded plinth, a first-floor cill band, and second-floor cill and lintel bands.

The central block is three stories high and consists of seven bays, flanked by two-storey single bay pavilions. The central block has a doorway that is accessed by three steps, featuring a segment-headed ashlar surround with a raised keystone and a segmental pediment. On either side of the doorway are three paired segment-headed sash windows, which have slightly projecting pilaster surrounds topped with flat hoods. Above these are seven smaller paired segment-headed sashes with flat hooded ashlar surrounds, followed by fourteen smaller sashes with raised ashlar surrounds, each topped with a small ashlar circle.

On either side of the central block are two-storey single bay links, each containing a segment-headed sash in an ashlar surround with a flat hood, and above, a similar sash in a plain ashlar surround with a flat hood. Beyond these links are single-storey pavilions with pyramidal slate roofs, featuring pairs of segment-headed sashes in slightly projecting pilaster surrounds with flat hoods, and above, single similar sashes with ashlar surrounds and bracketed hoods.
