Description

The Harbour Walls and Weir, located 100 metres east off Bedale, were constructed in 1768. They are made of coursed ashlar stone and feature a three-tier weir flanked by L-shaped walls. The wall on the left makes a right-angle turn and continues for approximately 30 metres. On the right side of the weir, there are remains of wooden sluice gates and two iron rings embedded in the walls. In 1768, £5,000 was raised to include four miles of Bedale Beck in a project aimed at making the River Swale navigable from Moreton to Boroughbridge.
