Description

Mowbray Grange, built in 1839, originally served as a workhouse and is now a geriatric hospital. The building is constructed of limestone with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof. It comprises a central three-storey block of three bays, with lower two-storey, three-bay wings extending from either side, each wing terminating in a single-bay pavilion with a pedimented top. Running to either side are boundary walls with gateways, beyond which are single-storey, single-bay blocks. The central block features a half-glazed door with a fanlight, set within a stone surround, flanked by round-arched windows with margin glazing and segmental relieving arches. The first floor has a cill band and 16-pane sashes with flat arches, while the second floor accommodates casements also with flat arches. The side wings have sash windows with glazing bars and stone cills on the ground floor, and a cill band above the first-floor sashes, which include narrow sashes with glazing bars in the central bays and 16-pane sashes in the outer bays, all with flat arches. The pavilions feature large, round-headed arches which enclose two 4-pane sashes with margin glazing bars on the ground floor, and a Diocletian window with a casement on the first floor, all featuring a cill band. Stone coping runs along the walls, punctuated by carriage gates. Beyond these walls are gabled blocks with round-arched recesses; the left-hand block has a sash with glazing bars and an impost band, while the right-hand block has a 20th-century wooden carriage door. The central three bays are capped with a pyramidal roof and end stacks, while the wings have a ridge stack on each side.
