Description
39 Frenchgate is a mid-18th century house set back from the road. The exterior is now roughcast, featuring chamfered rusticated stone quoins. It has a moulded stone cornice and a parapet. The building stands three storeys tall and has three windows with stone surrounds; there are no glazing bars except for one ground floor bay on the left. The right-hand bay and door date from the early 19th century and include a traceried fanlight, along with a rectangular stone porch supported by two detached Tuscan columns. This porch features an entablature and a pediment with a Doric triglyph frieze that continues around the right-hand bay. The door consists of four panels, and there are iron handrails leading up to four worn steps. The house is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 27 (odd) and Nos 31 to 43 (odd).
