Description
The Grove is a large red brick mansion located on Frenchgate, built in 1750 by Caleb Readshaw, who was the Mayor of Richmond. The house is set back from the road and features an old slate roof. The original structure consists of three storeys with five windows that have moulded stone frames and hung sashes without glazing bars. There is a one-window extension on the left side of the building. The mansion has chamfered stone quoins and a moulded stone cornice, with brick parapets that are capped with stone. The left section of the building is slightly set back and includes a three-light window on each storey, which has rusticated stone keystones and no glazing bars. The main section features two large semi-circular bows on the ground floor, each with stone half-columns, likely added in the early 19th century, and three lights. There is a later central moulded stone doorcase with a plain frame, pulvinated frieze, and cornice, leading to a modern door. The interior is likely to be of good quality. The Grove is part of a group with Nos 1 to 27 and Nos 31 to 43 on the same street.
