Description

This is an early 17th-century house in Gargrave, situated on Church Street. Originally, it may have been a rear wing with a later addition resulting in a T-shaped plan. A substantial 19th-century restoration has concealed much of the original architectural detail. The main block is two storeys with an attic, featuring two bays on either side of a central staircase. Smaller two-storey wings extend to the south and north. The principal fronts are the gabled ends, each featuring four-light mullion windows with stepped chamfered stones to the attic; these windows are original. The remaining windows are 19th-century replacements, including one of five lights to the ground floor and two of three lights to the first floor on the west side, and one of six lights and one of five lights on the east side. Other original windows include a blocked two-light window on the south face at first floor level, and a three-light window to the rear kitchen wing. All original windows have hood moulds. There are three external chimney stacks. Inside, the west ground floor room has a good elliptical-arched, chamfered fireplace, while the east ground floor room has a Tudor-arched fireplace with two stones in the head. A staircase of 17th-century appearance (though likely 19th-century in construction) is located between these rooms. The attic of the main block contains four good upper crucks, arch braced to a collar with a short king strut into which the principals are jointed. This structure carries the ridge piece and short longitudinal braces.
