Description

This is a mid-17th century house with an early mid-18th century enlargement and alteration, constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings to the 18th-century extension, and stone slate roofs. Originally L-shaped, with an added 18th-century wing, it now presents a T-shape. The earliest part of the house has double-chamfered mullioned windows arranged in an unusual three-cell plan. The first cell has a two-light window and a Tudor-arched doorway with chamfered surrounds. The second cell features a three-light window above a two-light window, and the third cell has a seven-light window above a four-light window. A dripmould with heart-shaped stops adorns the ground floor window of the second and third cells. The roof has been raised two courses, and stone gutter brackets are present. There are stacks to the left gable and one on the ridge. The 18th-century wing is set at right angles to the third cell, and has a rear which forms a new south-east facing front. A gabled wing to the left exhibits rusticated quoins, a band, and a moulded cornice forming a pedimented gable. It has three bays of cross-windows with flat-faced recessed mullions which incorporate an inner chamfer, as well as a doorway with an architrave and a two-light overlight in the third bay. There are two ridge stacks, and a stack at the junction with the earlier house, which displays different masonry to the first floor, incorporating 18th-century windows and quoins to the wing. The two 17th-century cells have quoins to the right side, and double-chamfered mullioned windows to the ground floor only; originally transomed, they now have taller replaced mullions, and sit under a dripmould with carved stops. These include a two-light fire-window, a six-light window with a king-mullion, and two two-light windows. A doorway with monolithic jambs has been inserted between these windows. The first floor has four two-light windows. A large external stack stands to the right gable.

Inside, the housebody (of the west range) features a fireplace with a large segmental-arch and a chamfered surround, along with two chamfered spine beams with ogee stops, a 17th-century staircase with finely turned balusters and a slender handrail-fitted newel, and an oak-panelled wall to the underside. Other rooms have chamfered beams. The chambers above have a queen-post roof. The junction with the south-east range is reported to have a timber-framed gable wall which is now covered. The 18th-century wing has two panelled rooms: one of oak, the other of pine, featuring large raised-and-fielded panels and a bolection-moulded fireplace with a fine set of Delft tiles depicting equestrian subjects. An open-well staircase has egg-cup-turned balusters and a moulded handrail and newels. A central room of the south-east front was altered internally in the 18th century, and includes two opposing doorways with stone bolection-moulded surrounds, matching that of the fireplace. The chamber above has square, painted panelling.
