Description
The Three Rise Locks with overflow channel on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal were built around 1773 by John Longbottom. They feature large dressed stone retaining walls that include rebates for gates. The first lock has widely splayed sloping walls on either side, while the second and third locks, located higher up the hill, have ramped walls and a flight of 15 stone steps on both sides. The overflow channel is positioned to the right and has connecting channels from the second and third locks. The canal itself was authorized by an Act of 1768 and was planned by James Brindley. This structure is part of the locks that lead to the notable 5-rise lock.
