Description

Taira House, formerly known as The Vicarage, is a house dating primarily to the 18th and early 19th centuries, and now divided into two separate occupancies. It appears to be composed of two distinct builds. The south-facing elevation is a combination of rubble and plastered construction, with stone slate roofs. The left-hand section is of rubble and contains large modern windows on the ground floor and two sash windows with glazing bars above. A plastered section of five bays follows, with sash windows featuring glazing bars, the first-floor windows set within plain stone surrounds with a decorative arris. To the right is a two-bay addition, also with sash windows with glazing bars. This addition has a doorcase featuring consoles and a cornice. The gable facing the street has been extended a foot beyond the quoins. Stone gutter brackets are present on all roof sections. The rear windows are all sash windows with glazing bars, with the exception of a 19th-century canted bay. A tall, round-headed stair window is located at the rear of Taira House. Records indicate rebuilding work at No.13, The Vicarage, in 1728 and 1743.
