Description
Claughton House is a house, probably from the 17th century, with later alterations from the 19th century. It is built of rendered brick and has a slate roof, designed in an H-plan. The house has two storeys. The south-west front features 19th-century windows with timber mullions and transoms. Each cross-wing consists of two bays with cross windows. The centre is recessed and has three bays, with the outer bays containing cross windows and the central bay featuring 6-light mullioned and transomed windows. The door, located in the right-hand bay of the centre, has a timber surround. The gables have copings with kneelers. There are chimneys on the right side, including an external stack, and at the rear. The left-hand return wall has a studded door with strap hinges in a chamfered surround, topped with a Tudor-arched head inscribed 'R 1593 W', although it is unclear if this date relates to any part of the existing building. At the rear of the right-hand cross-wing, there is a blocked 3-light attic window with brick mullions. Inside, the right-hand room features chamfered and stopped ceiling beams with later applied mouldings. The staircase has a straight flight with a closed string, a moulded handrail, and turned and fluted balusters. On the first floor, there is a room in the central part of the house with 18th-century raised and fielded panelling, and the fireplace is flanked by fluted pilasters. The chimney stack projecting from the right-hand cross-wing is said to incorporate a garderobe, while the left-hand cross-wing is said to have a roof with curved principals.
